Omega-3 fatty acids are probably the most recommended supplement for dogs and cats, and at the same time one of the most misunderstood. The same name hides different molecules, with different effects and very unequal evidence behind them. When we talk about real benefits in veterinary medicine we almost always mean two fats found in fish oil, EPA and DHA, not the flaxseed that is also sold as omega-3. Understanding this difference, knowing where the evidence is robust and where it is thin, and learning to read a product label, is what separates a useful purchase from a jar forgotten in the cupboard. Not all omega-3s are the same thing

  2. Check that the maker reports testing for heavy metals and contaminants, because fish accumulate them.
  3. Prefer dark, well sealed packaging and check the expiry date: omega-3s go rancid easily and an oxidised oil loses value and can upset the stomach.
  4. Be wary of flax oil only products sold as equivalent to fish oil: for dogs and cats they are not.
