Urinary stones and crystals are among the most common problems in dogs and cats, and diet is one of the few levers an owner can genuinely use to lower the risk. The tricky part is that the two most common types, struvite and calcium oxalate, behave almost in opposite ways: what discourages one can encourage the other, and vice versa. That is why there is no single anti stone diet, and generic advice picked up online or passed between owners often does more harm than good. Cats in particular are naturally low drinkers, descended from desert ancestors and traditionally getting much of their water from prey. An entirely dry diet produces very concentrated urine, and this is one reason wet food plays such an important role in preventing feline urinary problems.

Struvite and oxalate: two opposite enemies

Stones have a nasty habit of coming back, and prevention is ongoing work, not a course that ends when the symptoms disappear. A few simple habits, combined with scheduled checks, meaningfully reduce the risk of recurrence.

  1. Make water easy and inviting: several clean bowls in different spots, frequent changes, and for cats try fountains and wide, shallow bowls.
  2. Increase the moisture of the diet as advised, favouring wet food or moistening the dry when agreed.
  3. Offer frequent chances to urinate: clean litter trays in adequate number for cats, regular outings for dogs.
  4. Keep a correct weight, because being overweight is associated with a higher urinary risk in both species.
  5. Stick to the diet without adding extras that unbalance it, and keep a note of any urinary episodes.
  6. Do not skip the checks: urine analysis and, when indicated, periodic imaging catch a recurrence before it becomes a serious problem.

Logging how much the animal drinks, how often it urinates and the look of the urine helps you catch the first signs early and gives your vet concrete data to base decisions on, far more useful than a vague recollection.
