Household poisoning: the time windows that genuinely matter
Why the first hour decides, which household substances cause delayed signs, and what to tell your vet so the useful window is not lost.

In household poisoning the problem is almost never identifying the poison, it is working out how much time is left. Most substances dangerous to dogs and cats sit in the kitchen, in the medicine cupboard, under the sink or on the windowsill, and are swallowed while nobody is watching. From that moment two clocks run together: absorption, which makes decontamination pointless after a while, and the onset of signs, which in some cases only starts days later, once the damage is done. Knowing which substances belong to the first group and which to the second completely changes how you should react.
Why the first hour counts more than any other
Once a substance has been swallowed, the time it spends in the stomach is the only window in which it can still be removed. After that phase, intestinal absorption carries it into the bloodstream and management becomes supportive care and, where one exists, an antidote. This is why decontamination is more effective the earlier it happens, and generally makes sense within the first hour or two after ingestion.
That does not mean nothing can be done after two hours, nor that you can stop worrying. Some substances stay in the stomach much longer, for instance when they form compact masses or when the animal has just eaten. Others have an antidote that works within its own window, independent of the decontamination one. The practical rule is to call anyway, stating the exact time of ingestion.
What to do in the first minutes
The correct sequence mostly serves to stop you wasting the useful window on internet searches and home attempts. What the vet needs to know comes down to a handful of facts, and gathering them takes under two minutes.
Separate the animal from the substance
Move the dog or cat into a safe room and collect what is left of the product. If other animals live in the house, check them too: exposure is often collective.
Retrieve the packaging, not just the brand name
You need the list of active ingredients and the concentration, because products sold under the same name change formulation. Photograph the label and the barcode, and keep the container for the journey.
Estimate amount and time
How many tablets are missing from the blister, how many squares from the bar, how much liquid from the bottle, and at what time the animal was left alone with the product. A reasoned estimate is worth far more than I do not know.
Phone the clinic straight away
Give species, weight, substance, estimated amount, time of ingestion and any signs already present. The vet can consult toxicology references and tell you whether to come now or whether observation is enough.
Give nothing without instruction
No milk, no oil, no salt, no hydrogen peroxide, no activated charcoal bought at the pharmacy. Some of these practices make the picture worse, others make later treatment harder.
Set off with the product in hand
The original packaging at the clinic is worth as much as the description. If the animal has vomited spontaneously, bring a sample of the material in a sealed bag as well.
If seizures, breathing difficulty, collapse, generalised tremors or loss of consciousness appear, the phone call is made while already on the road. In that case there is nothing to assess at home: it is an immediate emergency regardless of the substance involved.
Common household substances and their time windows
The table below brings together the most frequent household exposures, the main target organ and the time at which the first signs appear. The timing column is the most useful one, because it dismantles the idea that an animal without symptoms is an animal out of danger.

With chocolate the decisive variable is the type, because theobromine content changes by an order of magnitude between milk chocolate, dark chocolate and unsweetened cocoa powder. The vet works out the risk by combining type, amount and body weight, so bring the packaging rather than describing it from memory. The same applies to xylitol, found in chewing gum, sugar free sweets, some toothpastes and some supplements: the concentration is almost never stated, and the product itself is needed.
Contact with skin, eyes and coat
Not every poisoning goes through the mouth. A product spilt on the coat becomes an ingestion the moment the animal grooms itself, and in cats that happens within minutes. Managing the skin phase exists precisely to interrupt that route.
- Put gloves on before touching the contaminated coat: many products irritate human skin too.
- Stop the animal licking, using a protective collar or a towel, while you phone the clinic.
- For oily substances wash with lukewarm water and a mild dish detergent, which cuts grease better than a shampoo.
- For powders, brush the residue off dry before wetting, otherwise water makes it stick to the skin.
- Never use solvents, alcohol, acetone or petrol to remove tar, paint or glue: they are more toxic than the original product.
- For eyes, rinse with sterile saline or clean room temperature water for at least fifteen minutes, then have the eye examined anyway.
- Always keep the product packaging, even when exposure seems purely external.
One situation deserves separate mention, because it is among the most frequent and most avoidable feline poisonings: applying a dog parasite treatment containing permethrin to a cat, or prolonged contact with a freshly treated dog. Cats metabolise this molecule poorly and develop tremors and seizures. If it happens, do not simply wash: wash and go to the clinic.
What happens at the clinic and why the packaging matters
Veterinary management of a poisoning follows a defined order, and almost every step depends on how precise your information is. Knowing what to expect makes the conversation faster and the decisions better informed.
- Assessment of stability: breathing, circulation, consciousness and temperature come before any reasoning about the substance.
- Decontamination, where still indicated: induced vomiting with veterinary drugs, gastric lavage under anaesthesia, or washing the coat.
- Adsorbents such as activated charcoal, in a formulation and timing decided by the vet, not always indicated and not for every substance.
- Specific antidotes where they exist, for instance vitamin K1 for anticoagulant rodenticides, with a treatment length that depends on the molecule.
- Supportive care: fluids, gastric protection, seizure control, oxygen, cardiac monitoring.
- Serial testing to follow the target organs over time, particularly kidney and liver, sometimes for several days.
The packaging matters because the same brand changes formulation between countries and between versions. With rodenticides, for example, the difference between an anticoagulant, a vitamin D derivative and a molecule acting on the nervous system completely changes the antidote, the treatment length and the outlook, and the brand name alone cannot tell them apart.
Making the house less dangerous
Preventing poisoning does not require a bare house, it requires moving a few categories of objects into closed storage. A walk through the rooms with this list in hand takes twenty minutes and lasts for years.
- Human and veterinary medicines in a closed cupboard, not on the bedside table and not in a bag left on the floor, which is one of the most frequent access points.
- Visitors' bags out of reach: many medicine ingestions happen during visits and stays.
- Cleaning products locked away, with particular attention to dishwasher tablets and concentrated cleaners, which are caustic.
- House plants checked one by one, with particular attention to lilies where cats live, which should simply be kept out of the house.
- Antifreeze and car products in a closed garage, with any spill cleaned immediately, because the sweet taste attracts dogs and cats.
- Slug, rodent and insect baits avoided where the animal has access, and never placed without knowing which active ingredient they contain.
- Risky foods off the worktops: chocolate, raisins in baked goods, chewing gum, raw yeast dough and leftovers containing onion.
- A bin with a locking lid, because a significant share of poisonings starts in the rubbish.
It is worth preparing the information side as well. Having the current body weight, the number of your regular clinic and the out of hours emergency number already written down means not hunting for them while holding an empty packet. Ask your vet as well which toxicology service they rely on, so you know in advance how the consultation will be routed.

- My dog ate chocolate but seems perfectly fine: can I wait?
- The absence of symptoms in the first hours does not rule out risk, because theobromine signs typically appear between two and four hours after ingestion. The useful thing to do now is to weigh the risk with your vet, giving the type of chocolate, the estimated amount, the time and your dog's weight. If the amount is trivial they will tell you, and if it is not you will still be inside the window where decontamination works.
- Can I make my pet vomit with salt water or hydrogen peroxide?
- No. Salt can cause sodium poisoning with neurological damage, and hydrogen peroxide causes severe gastritis and in some cases serious lesions, besides being ineffective or dangerous in cats. Both practices waste time and can make things worse. Inducing vomiting, when indicated, is done at the clinic with licensed drugs and under supervision.
- How long should I watch if the vet says to stay home?
- It depends on the substance, and whoever answered will tell you how long. As a rule, fast acting substances need attention over the first twelve to twenty four hours, while anticoagulant rodenticides, allium species and some kidney toxins mean keeping an eye on the animal for days. Note the time of ingestion, the amount and every symptom with its timestamp: that chronology is the most useful thing you have if the situation changes.
- My cat walked on a freshly mopped floor: is that dangerous?
- With diluted floor cleaners the main risk is not contact but licking the paws. The correct measure is to ventilate, wait until the surface is completely dry before letting the animal back in, and rinse the paws if it walked across while still wet. Concentrated products, phenol based disinfectants and caustic cleaners deserve more attention and a phone call if the animal had access.
- Should I keep activated charcoal at home for emergencies?
- Using it on your own initiative is not a good idea. Activated charcoal does not adsorb every substance, is useless for alcohols and metals, can cause aspiration if given to a dull animal and in some situations disturbs sodium levels. It should be used when needed, in the form and timing decided by the vet. Keeping the right phone numbers and a container for the product packaging is far more useful.

If you suspect an ingestion, separate the animal, retrieve the packaging with the active ingredients, estimate the amount and the time and phone the clinic immediately without giving anything on your own initiative. Remember that some substances only cause signs days later, so the absence of symptoms does not close the case. Spend twenty minutes putting medicines, cleaners, baits and plants out of reach, and keep the current weight and the clinic and out of hours numbers written down.
