Breed predispositions in cats: what to watch and when

A cat's breed is not just looks: it is a set of predispositions that changes which tests to run. Here is what to monitor for Persians, Maine Coons, Sphynx and mixed cats.

When you choose or adopt a cat, you look at the coat, the size, the temperament. But a breed also carries something you cannot see: a set of statistical predispositions built up by generations of selection. A Persian is not just a flat face and a long coat, it is also a higher probability of polycystic kidney disease and of breathing trouble linked to its conformation. A Maine Coon is not just a large, slow maturing cat, it is also a population in which hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is worth looking for before it shows any sign. The point is not to frighten anyone, nor to turn every cat into a patient: it is that knowing a breed's predispositions genuinely changes which tests make sense, at what age, and how often to record them over time. A predisposition is a reason to watch in a focused way, not a sentence already written.

A breed is a map of probabilities, not a destiny

Selecting a breed locks in certain desired traits, and along with them, unintentionally, it also concentrates genetic variants tied to particular diseases. This does not mean that every Persian will develop kidney problems or that every Maine Coon will develop heart disease. It means that, within that population, the frequency of some conditions is higher than in the ordinary cat, and that it is therefore worth looking for them actively rather than waiting for symptoms.

The practical difference lies exactly here. For a cat with no known predispositions you rely on regular check ups and a watchful eye on change. For a cat of a breed with documented risks you add specific tests, bring them forward ahead of any complaint, and repeat them at set intervals. A predisposition turns a test that looked excessive into a reasonable one: not because the cat is ill, but because it belongs to a group in which that disease hides more often.

Brachycephalic cats: breathing, eyes and teeth

Persians and Exotics share a brachycephalic conformation: the muzzle is shortened and the internal structures stay crowded into a reduced space. This has practical consequences on several fronts at once. Compressed upper airways can make breathing noisy and laboured, especially under exertion or in the heat. The tear ducts, distorted by the conformation, often fail to drain well, so tears pool around the eye and leave damp, irritated areas that need consistent cleaning.

Then there is the mouth. In a shortened skull the teeth have less room and tend to crowd and misalign, which favours plaque build up and gum problems. The eyes too, more exposed by the shape of the face, are more prone to corneal ulcers and should be watched for cloudiness, redness or unusual squinting.

  • Breathing: note if it becomes noisy at rest, if the cat breathes with its mouth open after mild effort, or if it tolerates heat poorly. In cats, open mouth breathing is always abnormal and should be reported at once.
  • Eyes: gentle daily cleaning of the folds around the eye and attention to excessive tearing, cloudiness or discomfort in the light.
  • Teeth: more frequent dental checks, because crowding speeds up plaque, tartar and gum inflammation.
  • Heat: brachycephalic cats cope worse with high temperatures, so keep them in cool spaces and avoid effort during the hottest hours.

Heart and kidneys: the checks that matter most

Two conditions deserve their own discussion, because they stay silent for a long time and because there are tests able to catch them before any symptom. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common feline heart disease and occurs more often in some breeds, including the Maine Coon and the Ragdoll. It is treacherous because it frequently gives no warning until a serious event appears: fluid on the lungs, a breathing crisis, or a sudden paralysis of a limb from a clot. The tool that lets you see it in advance is echocardiography, and in predisposed breeds it makes sense to repeat it over time as the vet advises.

Polycystic kidney disease, by contrast, involves Persians, Exotics and related breeds such as the British Shorthair. It consists of the progressive formation of cysts in the kidneys that, over the years, reduce their function. Here both abdominal ultrasound and the genetic test have a role, the latter revealing, in the bloodlines concerned, whether an individual carries the known variant. Knowing in advance changes the surveillance: more regular kidney checks, attention to thirst, urine and weight, dietary choices agreed with the vet.

Sphynx, Oriental and care tied to conformation

Some breeds carry not so much a specific disease as a conformation that asks for daily care different from the usual. The Sphynx is the clearest example: the lack of coat leaves the skin exposed and changes thermoregulation. These cats lose heat more easily, seek out warmth and need protection from the cold, but at the same time the bare skin is sensitive to sun and must be kept away from prolonged direct exposure. The skin, without the coat that absorbs sebum, tends to become greasy and needs gentle periodic cleaning of the folds and ears.

Siamese and Oriental cats, on the other hand, have a naturally slender, elongated build: it is easy to mistake their constitutional leanness for a problem, or, the other way round, to miss real weight loss because you are used to seeing them slim. This is why recording weight regularly matters even more in these breeds. Dental health deserves attention throughout life, with scheduled checks and observation of breath, gums and appetite.

  • Sphynx: warm rooms, protection from the sun, periodic cleaning of the skin and ears, and attention to keeping weight up because they burn energy staying warm.
  • Devon Rex and Cornish Rex: sparse or curly coats with similar skin needs, with sebum building up faster on the skin.
  • Siamese and Oriental: weight recorded consistently to tell natural leanness from genuine slimming, plus regular dental checks.
  • Long haired breeds such as the Maine Coon and Persian: frequent brushing to prevent mats and hairballs, and to spot lumps or sore areas early.

The domestic shorthair and the mixed cat: diversity and unknown risk

The domestic shorthair, the classic household moggie without a pedigree, is genetically far more varied than the selected breeds. That diversity is often a strength: it does not concentrate unfavourable variants the way a narrow bloodline does, which is why many of these cats turn out robust and long lived. It is not a guarantee of immunity, because the common feline diseases (kidney, dental, urinary, obesity with age) affect every cat, but it lacks that overload of risk tied to a few repeated variants.

The mixed cat, meaning one born from a more or less recent cross with a breed, sits in between. It may have inherited a breed's traits, and with them part of its predispositions, without anyone ever documenting them. In practice the risk exists but is unknown: you do not know which lines it comes from, so you cannot rely on a list of targeted checks. The right response is not to worry in the abstract, but to build surveillance around the animal's real signals and its routine check ups, staying ready to look deeper if something changes.

Building a surveillance plan that fits

Knowing about predispositions helps little unless it turns into a concrete plan, repeated over time and written down. The logic is always the same: start from what you know about the breed, agree with the vet on the tests that make sense, set their frequency, and record the values so that comparisons over time are possible. A single test captures one instant, a series of tests shows a direction.

  1. Start from what you know about breed or origin

    For a pedigree cat, gather the breeder's documentation and the tests done on the parents. For a mixed or ordinary cat, note what you know and any resemblance to a breed, without inventing risks.

  2. Agree the targeted tests with the vet

    Echocardiography for breeds at cardiac risk, ultrasound and genetic test for breeds at kidney risk, dental and skin checks where the conformation calls for them. The vet decides which ones and how often.

  3. Set a cadence, not a one off test

    Many of these conditions have to be followed over time, not ruled out once and for all. Decide how often to repeat ultrasound, echocardiography, blood pressure and blood work according to age and breed.

  4. Record the values in one place

    Weight, body condition, test results, dates of dental checks and notes on symptoms belong together, so that a change becomes visible by comparing entries over time rather than relying on memory.

  5. Watch the daily signals between tests

    Breathing, thirst, amount of urine, appetite, use of the high spots in the house and willingness to play. A stable change from before is often the first clue, and should be brought to the visit.

  6. Update the plan when something changes

    A result, a new symptom or advancing age can change how often to check. The plan is not fixed: it adapts to the results you gather over time.

It is worth remembering the other side of the question too: the responsibility of the breeder. A serious breeding programme runs health tests on the breeding cats, keeps individuals with known unfavourable variants out of reproduction, and makes the documentation available. Asking for those tests before taking on a pedigree kitten is not distrust, it is the most effective way to reduce inherited disease at the root, far more than any test done afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is a genetic test enough to feel safe about the breed?
No. A genetic test looks for already known variants linked to a specific disease: a negative result lowers that risk, but does not rule out that the same disease appears from other causes or that the cat develops others that cannot be tested for. For conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy the test that counts remains echocardiography, because it observes the heart as it is today, whereas the genetic test only tells you what the cat inherited. The two tools complete each other, they do not replace each other.
My cat is a mixed breed: which checks does it need?
For a mixed cat there is no targeted list as there is for a breed, because you cannot be sure which bloodlines it inherited. The right strategy is to build surveillance on the routine checks suited to its age and on watching the real signals: weight, breathing, thirst, appetite, dental health. If you notice a strong resemblance to a breed, mention it to the vet, who may suggest further checks. When in doubt, consistency of check ups matters, not anxiety.
Is a cat without a pedigree healthier than a pedigree cat?
The ordinary cat often enjoys greater genetic diversity, which tends not to concentrate the unfavourable variants typical of a narrow bloodline, and this frequently translates into good robustness. It is not an absolute rule, though: the common feline diseases affect every cat, breed or not. The difference lies in targeted inherited predispositions, more likely in some selected breeds. In any case health depends above all on care, feeding and check ups, not on origin alone.
My brachycephalic cat breathes noisily: is that normal?
Some breathing noise is common in brachycephalic cats because of the conformation, but it should not be taken for granted as harmless. Report to the vet a breathing that worsens over time, tiredness after mild effort, poor tolerance of heat and above all open mouth breathing, which in cats is always abnormal. It is better to have the situation assessed once too often than to underestimate a progressive decline, because in these cats the airways start out at a disadvantage.
