Parasite control for dogs and cats: a schedule built on real life cycles
Fleas, ticks, sandflies, mosquitoes and intestinal worms follow different cycles. Here are the real treatment intervals and how to keep track of them.

Almost every owner uses a parasite product, and many use it at the wrong moment. A pipette applied in June does not cover the whole summer, a collar bought in spring expires halfway through sandfly season, and a once yearly worming has almost no effect on the circulation of intestinal roundworms. A schedule that works is not built on habit but on the biology of each parasite: how long it lives, when it is active, and how quickly the population rebuilds after treatment. This page lays out those cycles, the documented intervals, and the criteria that decide what a dog or cat actually needs and when.
Why the schedule follows the parasite, not the calendar
A parasiticide protects for as long as the molecule stays present at an effective concentration, not for the interval between one purchase and the next. That duration is stated in the package leaflet and varies widely: some topical formulations cover four weeks, some chewable tablets reach twelve, some collars claim several months. Laying the parasite's active season over those numbers is what turns a product into continuous protection.
With fleas the point is even sharper. The adults you see on the coat are the minority of the population: most of it lives in the home as eggs, larvae and pupae. Treating the animal once moves the problem a few weeks down the line and then lets it return, because pupae can stay in the cocoon for months and hatch when they sense warmth and vibration.

Under favourable conditions, around 25 degrees Celsius and high humidity, the full flea cycle closes in about three weeks. That is why effective treatment has to be maintained for at least two or three consecutive months once an infestation is under way: you need to cover several cycles, not one.
Fleas and ticks: intervals and the real season
The idea that ticks are a summer problem no longer matches the activity data. The commonest European species start questing for a host just a few degrees above freezing, and in mild winters they stay active with barely a pause. Fleas, for their part, find a suitable environment in heated homes all year round, whatever the weather outside.

One practical detail changes efficacy: after a topical product you normally need forty eight hours before bathing or swimming, and frequent washing shortens the stated duration. If your dog swims every week, a chewable tablet or a water resistant product is a more coherent choice than a spot on pipette.
Sandflies and mosquitoes: the vectors that carry disease
Against fleas and ticks the goal is to kill the parasite. Against sandflies and mosquitoes the goal changes: the bite itself has to be prevented, because transmission happens within minutes. This calls for molecules with a repellent and rapid knockdown effect, and for cover with no gaps in the schedule across the whole vector season.
- Leishmania infantum: carried by sandflies, established across much of the Mediterranean basin and spreading northwards. Prevention relies on pyrethroid repellents, as collars or spot on products, covering late spring to early autumn.
- Dirofilaria immitis, heartworm: carried by mosquitoes, prevented by a monthly product that clears larvae in the first weeks after infection. In a dog never treated before, antigen testing comes first.
- Dirofilaria repens: the subcutaneous form, less severe but zoonotic, prevented by the same monthly protocols.
- Tick borne diseases including babesiosis, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis: risk drops both by preventing attachment and by removing ticks promptly, since many agents need hours of attachment to transmit.
There is only one correct way to remove a tick: fine tipped forceps or a dedicated hook, gripped as close to the skin as possible, with steady traction and no violent twisting. Never use oil, alcohol, flame or petroleum jelly, which irritate the parasite and increase the chance of regurgitation at the attachment site. After removal, note the date and the location on the body, because if fever, lameness or dullness appear in the following weeks that note steers the diagnosis.
Intestinal parasites: how often worming is actually needed
Once a year worming is the commonest practice and the least effective one. European guidelines on companion animal parasite control set a minimum of four treatments a year for adults at ordinary risk, and make clear that to genuinely reduce Toxocara egg shedding the frequency has to rise to monthly in high risk animals. As an alternative to routine dosing you can choose repeated faecal testing and treat only when a sample is positive.

A point that is often missed: the flea product and the wormer are rarely the same thing, and where combinations exist they do not all cover the same spectrum. Before considering worming done, read which species the leaflet lists: roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms are not always included together. Tapeworm in particular needs specific molecules, and treatment is pointless unless fleas are controlled at the same time, since they act as the intermediate host.
Weight, dose and the form of the product
Parasiticides are dosed in weight bands, and underdosing is the most banal cause of failure. A dog that has gone from 9 to 11 kg since the last purchase needs the higher band, and a cat that has lost weight should not keep receiving the previous dose. Weighing before buying, not after, avoids a whole cycle of insufficient protection.
- Spot on: quick to apply, must reach the skin between the shoulder blades rather than sit on the coat. It usually needs 48 hours before bathing, and contact with hands and children should be avoided until dry.
- Chewable tablets: a certain dose and no residue on the coat, useful for dogs that swim or live in close contact with people. Many need to be given with a meal to be absorbed properly.
- Collars: long stated duration in months, but efficacy depends on continuous skin contact. Fit with two fingers of slack and replace on the expiry date, not when they look worn.
- Environmental sprays and powders: they act on the home, not on the animal, and are used alongside topical treatment once a household infestation exists.
In cats the choice narrows: many canine molecules are contraindicated, oral dosing is often difficult and collars are not always tolerated. That is why the preferred form in cats is almost always a spot on with active ingredients licensed for the species, applied at the base of the neck where the tongue cannot reach.
Building the schedule and never missing a date
The parasite schedule has one feature that makes it fragile: the due dates never line up. The external topical expires on a rhythm of weeks, heartworm prevention is monthly and seasonal, worming follows its own pace. Keeping all of that in your head is unrealistic; writing each one down with the date of last administration is the only approach that survives the years.
List the parasites that genuinely apply
Consider where the animal lives, whether it goes out, whether it swims, whether it walks in woods or long grass, whether it travels to southern Europe, whether small children live in the house. That risk profile decides which lines belong in the schedule.
Record active ingredient, date and weight
Writing down the word treatment is not enough. You need the product name, the active ingredient, the application date and the animal's weight at that moment, because those three items are what explain an apparent failure later.
Work out the due date from the leaflet
Add to the application date the number of weeks the manufacturer states for the parasite you care about. Some products declare different durations for fleas and for ticks: the shorter one governs the schedule.
Set the reminder a few days early
An alert three to five days before the due date leaves time to buy the product. An alert on the day itself almost always produces a week long gap in cover.
Review at every change of season or circumstance
Moving house, a holiday in an endemic area, the start of sandfly season or a second animal arriving all change the risk. The schedule needs updating then, not the following year.

- Do I need parasite treatment in winter too?
- For fleas, almost always yes: in heated homes the cycle never stops and the environmental burden persists year round. For ticks it depends on local climate, since in many regions they stay active a few degrees above freezing and mild winters have stretched the season. For sandflies and mosquitoes winter cover is unnecessary in most temperate areas, but heartworm prevention follows your vet's advice based on the local mosquito season.
- Does a strictly indoor cat need protection?
- The risk is reduced, not eliminated. Fleas arrive on shoes, on clothing and on other pets, and mosquitoes come in through windows. For a strictly indoor cat with no other animals going outside, you can agree a lighter plan with your vet based on regular coat checks and faecal testing rather than routine dosing. If a dog in the household goes out, however, the cat belongs in the plan.
- Can I use a dog product on my cat at a reduced dose?
- No, and with pyrethroids such as permethrin it is potentially lethal. Cats metabolise many molecules differently and toxicity is not simply a matter of quantity. Even between products licensed for both species the formulations differ. Use only what lists the cat among its target species, at the correct weight band.
- Is a collar enough on its own?
- It depends what it has to cover. A good repellent collar can handle fleas, ticks and sandflies for several months, but it does not protect against heartworm, which needs its own monthly prevention, and it does nothing for intestinal worms. Efficacy also depends on constant skin contact: a collar worn loose, taken off at night or frequently soaked delivers far less than the label suggests.
- Can faecal testing replace routine worming?
- It can, provided it is repeated as often as you would have treated and the sample is pooled over several days, because egg shedding is intermittent. It is a sensible strategy for low risk animals and for owners who prefer to treat only when needed. It is not suitable for puppies and kittens, where the burden is high from the first weeks, nor in areas endemic for Echinococcus, where routine treatment is preferred.
