Why rest is a health signal

  • More fragmented sleep, with many wake ups, can go with joint pain, skin itching or abdominal discomfort.
  • A marked rise in night time restlessness, above all in the older animal, may be linked to cognitive decline or a sensory change.
  • An animal that sleeps far more than usual and struggles to get going deserves attention, because apathy is a non specific but real sign.
  • Changes in resting posture, such as seeking an unusual position, can point to breathing difficulty or pain.
  • Sudden changes matter more than absolute values: each animal has its own normal, and that is where the deviation is measured from.

False alarms and limits to know

Every device makes errors. Knowing them avoids both rushing to the vet over a problem that does not exist and ignoring a reading that would deserve attention.

  • An animal that stays still but awake, for instance watching from the window, can be counted as asleep.
  • A collar that is too loose or badly positioned records movement imprecisely and skews the counts.
  • Sensors under the bed only work if the animal actually sleeps there, and go blind when it moves elsewhere.
  • Notifications set with overly sensitive thresholds generate frequent alerts that, in time, all end up ignored.
  • Comparing your animal with generic breed or species averages makes little sense: the right reference is its own past.

My cat is sleeping more: should I worry?
It depends on what you mean by more and on the context. Cats naturally sleep many hours, and seasonal or heat related variation is normal. A marked, stable rise in rest together with apathy, reduced appetite, less desire to interact or trouble moving is a signal not to ignore. Is a collar or an ambient under bed sensor better?
