Getting a cat that barely drinks to drink more
How to measure what a cat actually drinks, raise water intake with changes you can verify, and recognise when the vet has to be involved.

Cats descend from a desert animal with a poorly responsive thirst mechanism: in the wild almost all their water came from prey, which is roughly three quarters water by weight. A cat fed only dry food therefore has to make up the difference by drinking, something its instinct does not push it to do with the same urgency. The result is a chronically borderline intake that puts pressure on the urinary tract and the kidneys. This guide does not start with advice, it starts with measurement: first you find out how many millilitres are actually drunk, then you apply the changes that move that number, then you check whether it moved. Without measurement every change stays an impression.
How much water is needed and where it comes from
The reference commonly used in practice for maintenance is around 50 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. It is a total figure: it includes water drunk and water contained in food. For a 4 kg cat that means roughly 200 ml a day from all sources, not 200 ml from the bowl.
The difference between a cat that drinks a lot and one that never seems to drink is usually not the cat, it is the food. Wet food normally declares a moisture content between 75 and 82 per cent; dry food sits between 6 and 10 per cent. The table below does the arithmetic for the same 4 kg cat and makes clear why comparing two cats' drinking habits is meaningless until you look at what they eat.

Measuring intake without fooling yourself
No intervention means anything without a baseline, and the baseline has to be taken properly: in a heated home a wide bowl loses enough water to evaporation to distort the figure. So you need a control bowl, identical, filled at the same moment and placed somewhere the cat cannot reach.
Set out two identical bowls
Fill both with the same amount of water, measured with the graduated jug. One is the cat's bowl, the other stays shut in a room the cat cannot enter: it measures how much water evaporates on its own.
Pick a time and stick to it
Take the reading at the same time every day, for example eight in the morning. Measuring at different times introduces variability that makes day to day comparison useless.
Measure what is left after twenty four hours
Pour whatever remains in the cat's bowl into the graduated jug and write the value down. Do the same with the control bowl.
Subtract evaporation
Water drunk is the difference between what you poured in and what remains, minus the amount lost from the control bowl. Without that subtraction you systematically overestimate intake.
Repeat on three consecutive days
A single day tells you nothing: cats drink irregularly. Average the three days and treat that number as your baseline.
Divide by body weight
Divide the average millilitres by the cat's kilograms. You get a per kilogram value you can compare over time even if weight changes, and one your vet reads without needing an explanation.
The changes that genuinely move the number
Interventions fall into two families: increasing the water that arrives with food, and making the bowl more acceptable. The first family produces the larger result, because it does not depend on the cat's motivation. The second is still necessary, because the wrong bowl cancels out every other effort.
- Move wholly or partly to wet food: this is the change with the biggest and most durable effect.
- Add 20 to 40 ml of lukewarm water to wet food and stir it in: many cats accept it if the increase is gradual, starting from a spoonful.
- Use wide shallow bowls in ceramic or steel: a narrow deep rim presses the whiskers against the sides and many cats avoid it.
- Fill the bowl to the brim: the cat then drinks without lowering its head into the container and without losing sight of the room.
- Increase the number of water points: a practical rule is one per cat plus one, spread over different rooms and levels.
- Keep water away from the litter tray and the food bowl: avoiding a source perceived as contaminated is instinctive behaviour.
- Change the water at least twice a day and wash the bowl daily: a biofilm forms within hours and cats notice it.
- Try a fountain: moving water is cooler and better aerated, but it needs washing and the pump needs cleaning as often as the maker specifies.
When it is not about habits at all
Drinking little is usually a matter of food and environment. Drinking a lot, on the other hand, is a clinical sign rather than an improvement: if the number you measure rises above 100 ml per kilogram per day the assessment is veterinary, because that value is the threshold commonly used to define polydipsia and appears in conditions such as diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism.

One useful home check is the skin tent: lift the skin between the shoulder blades gently and in a well hydrated cat it drops straight back. If it stays up for a few seconds, dehydration is already obvious and an extra bowl will not fix it. That said, the test is less reliable in thin older cats, so the overall picture counts for more than the skin tent: weight, appetite, energy and the amount of urine produced.
Checking and holding the result
After two weeks of changes, repeat the measurement exactly as you did the first time, same hour and same control bowl. An honest comparison is between two measurements taken the same way, not between a memory and a hope.

Frequently asked questions
- How much should a four kilo cat drink?
- There is no single number, because it depends on how much water arrives with the food. The overall clinical reference is around 50 ml per kilogram per day from all sources, so roughly 200 ml for a four kilo cat. On a wet food diet most of those millilitres come from the food bowl and seeing little drinking is normal; on dry food alone almost all of it has to come from water.
- Do fountains actually work or are they a fad?
- They work for some cats and not for others, which is exactly why the effect should be measured rather than assumed. Introduce the fountain on its own, measure three days before and three days after, and compare the millilitres. If the number does not change, moving water was not the issue and the work belongs on food moisture instead.
- Can I add water to kibble?
- You can, but soaked kibble changes texture and many cats refuse it. Once wet it also follows the rules for wet food: it has to be eaten straight away and cannot sit in the bowl for hours. In most cases replacing part of the ration with wet food is more effective, since it comes with the water already built in.
- My cat drinks from the tap and ignores the bowl: should I go along with it?
- Yes, provided the source is safe and regularly available. A preference for running water is common and there is nothing to correct: it simply means the bowl is not an acceptable source for that cat. Still, leave several water points around the house and refresh them often, so intake does not depend on you being in the bathroom.
- Does drinking more prevent urinary problems?
- Higher water intake produces more dilute urine, and that is one of the measures recommended in the long term management of several lower urinary tract disorders. It is not a treatment and does not replace a diagnosis: if your cat has already had urinary episodes, the plan comes from your vet and hydration is one part of it, alongside diet and reducing environmental stress.
What to do next
Measure for three days with two identical bowls, subtract evaporation and divide by body weight: that number is your baseline. Then change one thing at a time, starting with food moisture, and measure again after two weeks. If the value rises above 100 ml per kilogram per day, or if the cat strains in the tray without producing urine, this is no longer a home matter and belongs with your vet immediately.
