Positioning the lamp at the correct distance

The distance between lamp and animal is decisive: too far and the useful UVB does not arrive, too close and it can become excessive. The most neglected part is maintenance. Since UVB drops before the light goes out, relying on the lamp being on is a common mistake. A periodic check and a scheduled replacement are needed, regardless of how the lamp looks.

  • Note the lamp's installation date, so you always know how long it has been in use.
  • Replace the lamp within the time the maker indicates, even if it still gives off visible light.
  • If possible, measure UVB with a suitable instrument to verify the output is still adequate for the species.
