The ones that hurt but rarely kill

High risk, irritant, safe. The first leave the house or move to a closed room; the second move up high or get protected; the third stay where they are.
Remember that height is no barrier for a cat
Shelves, tall furniture and hanging pots are not out of reach for a healthy cat. For cats only a closed room, a closed terrarium or the absence of the plant actually works.
Offer something else to chew
A cat nibbling leaves is often after fibre and oral stimulation. A tray of cat grass or barley kept permanently available reduces interest in other plants far more than any deterrent spray.

- Do deterrent sprays work?
- Only a little, and unreliably. The effect fades as the product evaporates, many animals get used to the taste and some formulations damage the leaves. The strategy that holds over time is environmental: remove the high risk species, make the irritant ones physically inaccessible and offer something else to chew. A deterrent, when used, can only be temporary support.
- Are succulents safe?
- Some are, some are not, and the group is too varied for a single answer. Euphorbias release a latex that irritates skin, eyes and mucous membranes, aloe contains saponins that upset the gut in cats, and many species carry spines that cause eye injuries. As with any other plant, the answer depends on the precise botanical name, not on the retail category.

- It depends on the plant. With irritant species spontaneous recovery is the norm. With toxins that hit the liver or kidneys, apparent improvement after the first hours is a typical stage of the course, while organ damage progresses silently. - How do I identify a plant I do not recognise?
- Photograph the leaf, the flower and the overall habit in good light, and keep the nursery label, which carries the scientific name.
