Taking your dog to the United Kingdom after Brexit: documents, timing and routes

To take your dog into Britain you need a microchip, valid rabies and a correctly timed tapeworm treatment: here are the documents, deadlines and approved routes.

Valid everywhere, European Union, Italy, United Kingdom

Taking your dog to the United Kingdom is no longer the seamless journey it was when a European passport let pets move freely. After leaving the European Union, Britain kept requirements broadly similar to the EU ones, but it now applies them as a third country and enforces them with document checks on arrival. Three things are non negotiable: a readable microchip, a rabies vaccination that is in date, and, for dogs, a tapeworm treatment given by a vet within a precise time window before arrival. On top of that come the approved routes, because not every carrier and not every crossing accepts animals. Most trouble at the border comes from miscalculated timing or a missing stamp, not from impossible requirements. This page sets out what to prepare, in what order and how far ahead, and it is a reminder to always check the official rules shortly before you travel, because they can change.

The three requirements you cannot skip

The United Kingdom admits dogs, cats and ferrets from countries listed as controlled rabies risk, which includes European Union member states. For dogs coming from Italy and the rest of the Union the setup is the familiar one, with one important difference from travel inside the Union: the tapeworm treatment becomes compulsory and must be recorded precisely.

  1. A microchip that meets the ISO standard, implanted and readable, fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination.
  2. A valid rabies vaccination, given when the dog was at least twelve weeks old, with the waiting period of at least twenty one days after the first dose respected before travel.
  3. A tapeworm treatment with a praziquantel based product, given and recorded by a vet within the correct window before arrival.
  4. A travel document valid for the trip, which depending on the route may be a European pet passport or a dedicated health certificate.

The tapeworm treatment: the window to respect

This is where most trips fall apart. The treatment against Echinococcus keeps the parasite out of a territory that is meant to stay free of it, which is why it must fall inside a tight time window relative to arrival, neither too early nor too late.

How to work out the treatment window
ElementPractical rule
Who gives itA vet, who records it on the document with date and time
SubstanceAn authorised tapeworm product based on praziquantel
WhenIn a window between 24 and 120 hours, that is 1 to 5 days, before the planned time of entry
What must be shownDate, time and the vet's signature, plus the product used
Risk if the timing is wrongRefused entry, quarantine or forced return with costs falling on the owner

Because the window is pinned to the arrival time, a delayed ferry or a changed flight can shift it. It is wise to schedule the treatment towards the middle of the interval rather than the edge, so that a few hours of disruption do not push it out of date or make it too recent. If the stay is short and you return to a country that also requires the treatment, it has to be repeated according to the rules for the return leg.

European passport or health certificate

Which document travels with your dog depends on where it was issued and on the route. A dog resident in the European Union with a valid European passport can usually use it to enter the United Kingdom, as long as the vaccinations and treatments are correctly recorded in it. Those leaving from countries that no longer issue that document, or returning afterwards towards the Union, instead need a health certificate completed by an authorised vet within a limited number of days before departure.

  • Valid European passport: convenient for Union residents, it must be kept up to date and presented intact, with no missing pages or corrections.
  • Health certificate for travel: required in several scenarios, valid for a limited time and to be requested early, because it needs an examination and the vet's signature.
  • Keeping copies: carry both the originals and a clear digital copy, useful if you are asked to show the dates quickly.

It is worth separating the outward trip from the return. The rules for entering the United Kingdom and those for returning to the European Union are not symmetrical: coming back may call for a different document and a fresh tapeworm treatment. Anyone planning a round trip should map out both legs from the start, not just the first.

Routes, carriers and checks on arrival

You cannot enter from just any point by just any means. Pets must travel on approved routes with companies authorised to carry animals, which perform the document check. Ferries, the rail tunnel and flights each have their own rules on crates, booking a place for the animal and the maximum number of animals per person.

What to verify before booking
AspectWhy to check it
Authorised carrierOnly some companies are approved to carry animals into the United Kingdom
Booking for the animalA place for the dog often has to be requested separately and in advance, with limited spaces
How it travelsBy car on the ferry or the train the animal may stay in the vehicle or in a dedicated area, depending on the carrier
Document checkAt the crossing an officer verifies chip, rabies and treatment: keep everything to hand
Limit per personThere is a maximum number of animals per traveller for non commercial entry

On arrival the officer reads the microchip and compares it with the document, then checks the rabies and tapeworm treatment dates. If something does not add up, the animal can be held, sent back or placed in quarantine at the owner's expense. Turning up with the dates already highlighted and a chip that reads on the first try makes the check a formality of a few minutes.

Getting ready without surprises: a timeline

Almost every snag is avoided by working backwards from the departure date. Here is a sensible sequence for a dog leaving from Italy or another Union country.

  1. Check microchip and rabies well ahead

At least a month before, confirm the chip reads and the vaccination is in date. If it is missing or expired, allow for the twenty one day wait after the dose.

  2. Choose an approved route and carrier

Book the animal's place on the ferry, train or flight, checking that the company is authorised to carry animals to the United Kingdom and which containers it requires.

  3. Book the tapeworm treatment in the right window

Arrange the vet so the praziquantel falls between 24 and 120 hours before entry, aiming for the middle of the interval to absorb any delay.

  4. Check the travel document

Make sure the passport or health certificate shows the correct dates legibly and that no signatures or stamps are missing.

  5. Prepare the document folder

Gather originals and copies, highlight the key dates and save a digital version, so at the crossing you can show everything in seconds.

  6. Plan the return too

If you go back to the European Union, check which document and which treatment the return will need and book the second vet appointment straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Does my dog's European passport still work for entering the United Kingdom?
Generally a valid European passport, issued in the Union with vaccinations and treatments correctly recorded, is accepted for entering the United Kingdom. The document must be intact and the dates consistent. Watch the return, though: coming back into the Union the conditions can differ and an additional document or treatment may be needed. Always check both legs before you travel.
How long before arrival should the tapeworm treatment be given?
The praziquantel treatment must be given by a vet in a window between 24 and 120 hours before the planned time of entry, that is one to five days. It must be recorded with date and time. Because the window is pinned to arrival, it is best scheduled towards the middle of the interval, so a delayed ferry or flight does not make it too recent or too old.
Is an antibody titre test needed as it is for some non Union countries?
For dogs leaving from European Union countries, which are treated as controlled rabies risk, the serological antibody titre test is not required to enter the United Kingdom. That blood check remains a requirement when travelling from or to unlisted countries. Your vet can confirm which category the departure country of your trip falls into.
What happens if something is not in order at the border?
If the microchip does not read, if the rabies dates do not respect the timing or if the tapeworm treatment is outside the window, the animal can be held, sent back or placed in quarantine, with costs falling on the owner. That is why it helps to arrive with the dates highlighted, the chip checked in advance and both originals and copies of the documents ready to show.

What to do next

To take your dog to the United Kingdom after Brexit, make sure the microchip predates the rabies vaccination, that rabies is in date with the twenty one day wait respected, and that a vet records the tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. Choose an approved route and carrier, book the animal's place, keep the passport or health certificate with the dates highlighted, and plan the return leg from the outset. Before you leave, always check the current official rules.
